Lyme Regis is a good town for this. It is small, largely independent, and used to visitors arriving damp and sandy with a dog attached — so the welcome is generally warm rather than merely tolerated. Most cafés, pubs and tea rooms here allow dogs in outdoor seating at minimum, and a great many are happy to have them inside too. The main exceptions are the supermarkets, which admit assistance dogs only.
What varies is not really whether dogs are allowed but how welcome they are, and that is what our community reviews above are for. A place that keeps bowls by the door and doesn't mind a wet Labrador on the flagstones is a different proposition from one that will grudgingly let you sit at the furthest outside table in a gale.
Best for: sea views, outdoor tables, after-beach stops
The greatest concentration of outdoor seating, and the obvious stop after a beach walk. Tables face the bay, there is usually room to settle a dog beside you, and staff here are the most used to sandy paws. Downside: it is exposed. On a windy day the front can be genuinely unpleasant, and in high summer the tables fill early.
Best for: shelter, a warm corner, winter walks
Up the hill from the front, the town centre cafés and pubs offer more indoor options and a good deal more shelter. Several old buildings here have flagstone floors and a fire in winter, which is exactly what you want after a wet walk. Pavements are narrow, so a well-behaved dog under the table is appreciated.
Best for: a stop mid-walk, watching boats
Handy if you are walking the Cobb or heading to Monmouth Beach. Remember that dogs must be on a lead along the harbour, the Cobb and the sea walls, so plan for a lead-on approach and departure.
🐾 A small local courtesy. Almost everywhere here will fill a water bowl if you ask — you rarely need to carry water for the town itself, only for the walks. A few things that keep dogs welcome in a town this size. Towel the worst of the sea off before you go in — most café floors here have seen worse, but it is appreciated. Keep leads short in doorways and on the narrow pavements of Broad Street. Ask before assuming an indoor room is fine, because some places allow dogs in one part and not another. And in summer, choose shade over a sea view if your dog is dark-coated; a black dog on hot paving is having a much worse time than you are.
Most independent cafés, pubs and tea rooms welcome dogs at least outside, and many allow them indoors as well. Supermarkets are the main exception, admitting assistance dogs only. Policies do vary with the season and with whoever is on shift, so it is always worth asking.
Yes — it is the business's choice, not a hygiene rule. Food premises are permitted to allow dogs in customer areas. That is why one café says yes and the one next door says outside only.
