Staying in Lyme Regis with a dog

Lyme Regis is well set up for dogs, and there is a lot of choice: self-catering cottages and apartments in the town, beach chalets along the front, bed and breakfasts, pubs with rooms, and campsites and caravan parks in the surrounding countryside. Three of the four beaches welcome dogs all year round, most cafés and independent shops are relaxed about them, and the coast path runs straight through — so once you are here, having a dog with you rarely limits what you can do.

The thing worth thinking hardest about is not whether a place takes dogs, but where in the town it sits. Lyme Regis is built down the side of a very steep hill.

Where to stay, and what the hill means

Down near the seafront

Easiest with a dog · beaches on the doorstep

Staying low means beach walks without a climb at either end, which matters enormously if your dog is elderly, arthritic, or simply small. You are also within a flat stroll of Marine Parade's cafés. The trade-offs are noise in high summer, tighter parking, and generally higher prices.

Up in the town and above it

Better value and views · a genuine climb home

Properties up Broad Street and above have the views, the parking and often the better prices. But every walk to the beach ends with the hill, and after a long day on the coast path that climb is real. Fine for a fit dog, hard work for an old one.

The Uplyme and Lim Valley side

Flat walking from the door · quieter

The countryside around Lyme Regis, Charmouth and Uplyme has campsites and caravan parks, and these are often the easiest places of all with a dog — outdoor space, fewer rules about muddy paws, and frequently no dog charge at all. Arriving without a car

It is perfectly possible. Axminster is the nearest railway station, roughly five miles away, with the X51 and X53 bus services connecting Lyme Regis to Axminster, Bridport and Dorchester.
